IDAHO BACKCOUNTRY FLYING TRIP

WHERE DID WE GO?

The trip began with a commercial flight into Bend, Oregon, where I met up with some old friends. From there, we loaded up our planes and set our sights on the backcountry. A few fuel stops were in order—first in Burns, Oregon, and then again in McCall, Idaho. After regrouping in McCall and mapping out our next leg, we climbed into the Cessna 180, lifted off, and pointed the nose straight toward the heart of the Idaho backcountry!

Our First Stop in the Backcountry

Once we left the McCall area, we headed just through the Vally and made our way to the Johnson Creek Airstrip (3U2).  There we met many people who were also camping out for the weekend.

The Nicest Grass Strip

We approached the Johnson Creek airstrip and touched down on the smoothest, longest stretch of grass I’ve ever landed on. After setting up camp right there at the strip, we couldn’t resist casting a line into the creek that winds alongside it. For day one, we kept things relaxed, soaking in the scenery and saving our flying fix for the cool morning air.

Day Two

I woke up to a lot of dew!  Deciding to not bring a tent may have not been the smartest decision.  Thankfully I slept under the wing of the airplane and stayed dry (for the most part).  After waking up and brushing our teeth, we headed out to the Flying B Ranch for breakfast...

The Approach

On our approach into the Flying B Ranch, we radioed ahead to let them know four planes and six hungry passengers were inbound for breakfast. Moments after touching down, a ranch hand rolled up with a truck and trailer to meet us at the airstrip. We piled in and rode the short half-mile up the road to the ranch, ready for a hearty backcountry meal.

Breakfast

After arriving at the ranch, we headed inside to order some delicious food!  I got a breakfast sausage and egg sandwich and it was amazing.

About the Flying B Ranch

The Flying B is a fully operational dude ranch (Meaning they do trail rides on horses).  With around 7-10 employees, they offer an amazing getaway for guests.  The coolest part about this ranch is that its only accessible via airplane or boat!

That's A Wrap

We had an incredible time in the Idaho backcountry, putting our Hellbenders to work and hopping between remote airstrips with some amazing company.
Huge thanks to the crew who brought me along to experience this special kind of flying!
